THE OTHER FACE OF HUMANITY

Smoky is a cute little Labrador puppy bought by the man (let us call him ‘Owner’. as is the practice) from the myriads of puppy factories dotting the city. The baby-like puppy is destined to be a ‘watch dog’ for the house in which it was adopted. The owner promptly buys a collar and a leash and the puppy’s destiny begins. The puppy is tied to the main gate to start a career of scaring away unwelcome visitors. His only property in this world was an aluminium vessel kept on his side. Days on and years on, the puppy grows in to a dog still tied to the gate. Even while the dog is performing its duty, be it sun or rain, with diligent sincerity, he grows old. Finding that the dog becomes sick often and has become inefficient, the owner decides to abandon him as unwanted. Strangely no one in the household makes any objection.
The dog is taken in the owner’s car and is literally thrown out somewhere on the outskirts of the city. The bewildered creature who does not know anything in this world other than the owner, stands on the road shivering in fear, cold and hunger. By sheer luck a Good Samaritan spots him and brings him to a shelter where he gets the love and protection he needs.
This is a true story.
There are a hundred stories of many Smokys, Miistys, Jackies, Dollys and Julies abandoned cruelly on the roads, who are not fortunate enough to be rescued. They die of hunger and fierce attack by street dogs.

A CASE OF UTTER INDIFFERENCE AND NEGLECT BY THE OWNER

The dog in the picture is a German Shepherd who is 13 years old. He was presented at Krupa Animal Hospital a few weeks ago in a shocking state by his owner. All his four paws were totally raw and wounded at the base and were being eaten away by maggots. The animal was experiencing excruciating pain in even taking a single step and could barely stand. His coat was matted and dirty and obviously never seen a bath or brush. The treatment was taken up and all the hair around the paws was carefully trimmed away to enable easy access to the paws. The wounds on the paws were then treated and all the maggots got rid off. After two weeks of treatment, the dog is now able to walk around though slowly and has begun eat as well. The wounds are healing up. But one wonders, will the wounds inflicted on this lovely creature’s soul ever heal? Through all his ordeal, not once has the owner either visited him or called to ask about his welfare. This dog will remain with Krupa until the end and get the love that he so deserves.
